Susanne Wurm, PhD, received her PhD in psychology from Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2019, she has been a professor of Social Medicine and Prevention at University Medicine Greifswald (UMG), Germany. Prior to UMG, she was professor of psychogerontology at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and she worked at the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA) in Berlin, among others as Co-director of the German Ageing Survey, a nationwide representative, cohort-sequential survey (i.e., with repeated cross-sectional and longitudinal samples) on middle-aged and older adults. Susanne is an Honorary Scientist of the DZA, a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), and in 2016 received the GSA Baltes Award. In addition, she is member of a research network on images of aging funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), a member of the graduate school “Human rights and ethics in the medicine for older people” at FAU, as well as member of a research network on labor market participation of older employees in North Rhine-Westfalia. Susanne also serves as a board member of several research projects at FAU and other universities as well as the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

Susanne‘s research areas are health and health changes in middle and later life and the role of psychosocial resources therein. In particular, her research focuses on the impact of different views on aging for health and health behavior, adaptation processes after health events, and the promotion of effective health behavior via interventions. She is an Editorial Board Member of the European Journal of Ageing and the Journal of Gerontopsychology and Geriatric Psychiatry and has published about 60 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the Journals of Gerontology, Psychology and Aging, the Developmental Review, and the Journal of Behavioral Medicine as well as about 50 book chapters.
