Machine Learning and Theory Development: Free online workshop

Machine learning has attracted huge attention in social sciences and neuroscience, delivering predictions that exceed any insight that a human researcher would be able to obtain with common theory-driven approaches. However, applications are often criticized as being mainly exploratory and inductive, and their utility for theory development is not yet clear. For this reason, we are organizing a free interdisciplinary online workshop with the title:

Machine Learning and Theory Development

taking place from 10 - 12 July 2023 (3 three-hour-sessions),
financed by Jacobs Foundation and CIFAR.

In this workshop, renowned experts from various fields will discuss how machine learning methods can be used to advance theory development. Presentations will be followed by panel discussions on similarities and differences, possibilities and limitations of the approaches. The workshop is targeted at applied researchers in any discipline interested in using machine learning methods to advance their field.

Our wonderful speakers are:

  • Dr. Ryota Kanai, founder and CEO of Araya
  • Dr. Katharina Dobs, University Giessen
  • Prof. Dr. Blake Richards, McGill University Mayank Agrawal (Princeton University)
  • Prof. Dr. Filiz Garip (Princeton University)
  • Dr. Anna Ivanova (MIT)
  • Prof. Dr. Rebecca Johnson, Georgetown University
  • Prof. Dr. Caspar van Lissa, Tilburg University
  • Prof. Dr. Justin Grimmer, Stanford University

The workshop is free of charge but it is still necessary to register to give us an idea of who will be attending and to enable us to communicate with you more efficiently.

More information, the workshop programme, and the registration link can be found on our website.

We would be honoured to have you join us for another workshop.

Recent Developments in Wage Determination, Distribution, and Job Skills

The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) is pleased to host an international workshop on recent developments in wage determination, distribution, and job skills from 14-15 June.

The traditional human capital model of wage determination fails to explain why wage disparities exist within or between firms, as firms themselves are deemed irrelevant. However, the availability of new data, such as employer-employee matched data sets, makes it possible to better explore issues of wage inequality. Consequently, models examining the sorting of workers across firms with varying productivity levels have gained importance. Our international conference aims to contribute to a better understanding of wage determination, distribution, and job skills.

Our outstanding speakers will address the significant rise in earnings inequality witnessed across numerous countries and the factors contributing to these developments. They will discuss the role of individual determinants of wage inequality, including tenure and job mobility, as well as firm characteristics and labor market institutions, and they will delve into the effects of wage losses following job displacement and the wage elasticity of recruitment.

Please visit the website for further information and the workshop programme.

Interested researchers can register until 7.6.2023 here: https://eveeno.com/recentdevelopments

The workshop is generously supported by funding of the Labor and Socio-Economic Research Center (LASER) of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Vouchers, contracting-out and performance standards: Market mechanisms in active labor market policy

October 24-25, 2008, Federal Employment Agency, 90478 Nuremberg, Germany

During the last years, market mechanisms have gained importance in the provision of employment services. In Germany, access to further training programs is now granted through vouchers, issued by caseworkers. Also, unemployed persons may ask for a voucher that entitles them to use the services of a private placement agency or may be assigned to private agencies that compete on a quasi-market. Only recently, for older persons also a wage subsidy voucher has been introduced. But does the introduction of market mechanisms into originally public bureaucracies in fact improve efficiency and flexibility of services delivered? The workshop presents international current research on the use of market mechanisms in active labor market policy. The scientific committee encourages in particular contributions on vouchers for active labor market programs, on contracting-out of employment services, but also on performance standards for public bureaucracies as well as for private providers, related to active labor market policies. Theoretical contributions, empirical research using survey evidence or experiments as well as policy-orientated papers are welcome.

The homepage is available here.
